“How I Approach Photographing a Concert”

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a lack of concerts to photograph over the last two months.  I thought I would use this downtime to write a few articles focusing on Concert Photography and other music-related themes.  This first article is about how I approach shooting a concert to make it interesting for the reader.   Photographing a concert is not much different than making a movie or writing a book. The goal is to tell a story that keeps the interest of your audience. It’s about capturing the experience of the show and sharing it in such a way that others can feel what it was like being there. Simply taking a series of closeups of the performer’s face is not going to portray the experience and will not maintain the attention of your audience. After three or four ne...

Qhairo // In Short

More than an incredibly slick and sublime track, ‘Blue Petals’ is a visionary artistic statement that sees Qhairo firmly set himself out as a captivating and compelling emerging artist. As the single is released today, we caught up with him to talk playing The Royal Albert Hall, Kwabs and sculptor PJ Harper. The first taste of his upcoming debut EP 60FOOTNOIR, due out this August, ‘Blue Petals’ offers a mesmerising fusion of smooth R&B, skittering beats and electronic flourishes. Flexing his soulful, inimitable vocals, Qhairo ranges from sultry, honeyed delivery to potent spoken-word and passionate bars, switching between these with seemingly effortless poise. A visceral, sensuous track, on ‘Blue Petals’ Qhairo explores his sexual identity and rom...

Howlin’ Rain: February 21, 2020 Union Pool + August 7, 2019 Brooklyn Bowl

Howlin’ Rain rolled in from the West Coast into Union Pool a few Friday nights ago and proceeded to deliver a lick-filled, thoroughly jam-forward set that gave us all a quick reminder of why the band’s latest record is Under the Wheels: Live From the Coasts Vol 1. Many fewer bands cry out for the live album treatment as compared to those pushing bad-sounding, paint-by-numbers dreck. Rest assured that Howlin’ Rain are solidly among the good guys; not only does the new record boast an almost completely different setlist than this show, it’s also an outstanding recording that foregrounds Ethan Miller’s guitar pyrotechnics. If you attended this show and didn’t grip a copy of Under the Wheels afterward, I hope it’s because you already bought one....

Why Say ‘Naw’ When You Can Say ‘Yeehaw!’

“What’s your favorite music genre?,” is one of the most commonly asked questions when getting to know someone. It’s not typically one of those types of questions that can make or break a friendship, but to some it just might be. For plenty of people, country is the cringeworthy genre of the music industry because they believe it is defined by its guitar strummin’, ‘Merica lovin’, dirt road cover, when it is much more than that. It’s an inclusive, heartfelt, wild genre for kids and adults of all ages. Just like every other music genre, country songs are written about heartbreak, spending time with friends, falling in love, hardships, and family. There are songs for when you’re feeling happy, sad, angry, hurt, blissful, and every other emotion in between, and each one you feel can be matc...
